The sparkling Caribbean Sea is dotted with more than 7.000 islands and provides a myriad of choices for the discerning traveller. This beautiful region enjoys a temperate climate with year-round sunshine, offering ideal conditions for sunbathing, outdoor activities and water sports outside of the hurricane season. No two islands are the same, as evolution has led to the development of a diverse native flora and fauna.
Landscape & Culture
The name „Caribbean“ dates from colonial times and takes its origin from the Carib, a native ethnic group living in the Lesser Antilles and parts of South America. The rich, culturally diverse history of this stunningly beautiful area forms a vivid tapestry of fascinating stories of conquest and wild adventure on the high seas. The legacy of the colonial period and the transatlantic slave trade is still very present on the islands and often gives travellers the impression of having gone back in time. The Caribbean is currently divided into 27 overseas territories and several dependent and sovereign states.
The Caribbean is located to the southeast of the Gulf of Mexico. The region is also known as the West Indies and owes this name to Christopher Columbus, who believed that he had reached the Indies (Asia) when he arrived here in 1492. The islands are divided into two archipelagos called the Antilles and the Bahamas.
With a similar history and geography to the islands of the Pacific and the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean islands are continental fragments consisting of volcanic land mass and living coral reefs. Due to natural evolution, the individual islands are home to a very diverse native flora and fauna.
The Caribbean Sea extends over approximately five million square kilometres, only 240,000 square kilometres being land mass. About 100 islands are constantly inhabited and no island, with the exception of Bermuda, lies further than 200 kilometres from a neighbouring island.
