Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the most important sight in Australia and arguably one of the most beautiful in the world. With an area of 348,700 km², it is the largest coral reef on earth, consisting of almost 3,000 individual reefs. It stretches with countless islands over an incredible 2,300 kilometres off the Australian east coast.

Ayers Rock

Australia’s landmark is Uluru, known as Ayers Rock in English. The sandstone monolith, which has existed for about 550 million years and is located in the centre of the Australian mainland, is a sacred symbol for Australia’s indigenous people. Uluru was the original name of the rock mountain, which the Aborigines had given it centuries ago. Ayers Rock was only named by the Australian authorities in the late 19th century. Since 2002, the mountain has officially borne both names. The rock consists mostly of sandstone and, depending on the time of day, it shines in brownish to red hues. Its location in the Uluru-Kata-Tjuta National Park makes Ayers Rock the ideal destination for an exciting road trip through the red landscapes of the Australian outback.

Sydney Opera House

The architecture of the Sydney Opera House is world-famous. The opera house, which is particularly known for its silhouette construction, stands on Sydney Harbour and is considered the city’s landmark and, along with Uluru, also the country’s landmark. It was built in 1959 according to the modern expressionist design of Jørn Utzon, an award-winning Danish architect. It was not completed until 14 years later. The Sydney Opera House has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. In five different halls with a total of over 5,500 seats, you can be swept away by great theatre and art performances as well as music concerts all year round.
