The Spanish Balearic island of Ibiza is known above all as a party stronghold. But even away from the bars and the vibrant nightlife, the Mediterranean island has many highlights to offer. Tranquil villages, idyllic bays and exciting culture form a varied holiday programme that clearly offers much more than just beach and parties on Ibiza.
The capital of Ibiza impresses above all with its romantic harbour and the beautiful old town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The extensive cultural offerings and a gigantic historical fortress complex are the highlights of the Mediterranean city.
Historic Old Town
The history of Ibiza Town dates back to 654 BC, when the Carthaginians founded a settlement here. Subsequently, the island’s rulers changed many times. They all left their mark on the charming old town, which is called Dalt Villa by the locals. Stroll through the pretty little streets, past the old churches and the many small shops with handicrafts.
Famous sunset
Café del Mar opened in 1980 and soon began to accompany the sunsets on the terrace with suitable music. This was so successful that the Café del Mar became an absolute hotspot. Even today, you can watch the sun sink into the sea here to the sounds of deep house, lounge and nu jazz while enjoying the delicious Mediterranean dishes and fruity cocktails.
Not far from the bay of San Miquel in Ibiza’s north lies this stalactite cave inside a 100,000-year-old rock formation. Today it is mainly visited by tourists, but in the past it served much more dubious purposes.
Smugglers’ Den
The Cova de Can Marca once served as a smugglers’ hideout for prohibited goods such as alcohol, tobacco or coffee. Today, fortunately, these products can be obtained legally, so visitors can concentrate on the natural beauty of the cave instead.
Exploring the cave
The stalagmites and stalagtites are illuminated in colourful light and create a very special atmosphere. Your tour of the Cova de Can Marca also takes you past various underground lakes and even a waterfall.
