The Faraglioni in the evening light, limoncello on deck and harbours where arriving is part of the programme.
Italy offers very different cruising areas within a small compass. Capri lies in the Gulf of Naples, with the Amalfi Coast right next door on the Gulf of Salerno, compact, steep and dramatic, with harbours where arriving is part of the programme in itself. Further north follows the Tuscan Archipelago around Elba, with sheltered anchorages and small island harbours.
In the south, a charter leads through the Aeolian Islands to the active Stromboli, which is at its most impressive when it throws out glowing lava at night. Sicily is larger and quieter than the well known islands in the north, and west of it lie the Aegadian Islands, a little visited cruising area that is demanding under sail. In the north of Sardinia, the Costa Smeralda, the Maddalena Archipelago and the harbour of Porto Cervo attract the most yachts.
You charter a yacht in Italy from ports such as Naples, Sorrento or Olbia, and it is at its finest in May, June and September. Protected zones with clear rules apply around Capri; your crew knows the permitted spots and registers with the harbours in good time. Combining the Amalfi Coast and Sardinia in one week is too much for a single trip.
Price range: from €60,000 per week, plus APA and local tax where applicable. The APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) covers fuel, harbour fees and provisions. It is paid in advance and settled at the end of the charter, and anything left over is refunded to you.

Names, dimensions, cabins, crew, photos and prices come from the yacht portfolio of BlueSun Luxury Yachts. Prices are guide prices per week, plus APA and local tax where applicable, and change with season and availability.
The Amalfi Coast is more compact, more dramatic and closer to culture and restaurants. Sardinia offers clearer water, more anchorages and fewer crowds. Combining both in one week is too much.
Protected zones with clear rules apply around Capri. Your crew knows the permitted spots and the mooring buoy fields and registers with the harbour in good time.
June and September. Stromboli is at its most impressive in the evening, and the crossings from Sicily are usually calm at that time of year.
Nancy Maier, founder of BlueSun Luxury Yachts, knows the harbours, the crews and the weeks that are still free. She replies within 24 hours, with a selection rather than a price list.
