Destination · Year-round
Granite boulders, atolls and water in colours you would otherwise assume had been retouched.
The Seychelles lie just south of the equator and consist of 115 islands. The 41 Inner Islands are grouped around the main island of Mahé and are granite islands with forest, mountains and short distances between Praslin and La Digue; the Vallée de Mai on Praslin is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 74 Outer Islands are flat atolls, further out and far less frequently visited.
The Maldives are the counterpart: around 1,190 small coral islands that lie like a chain in the Indian Ocean and rise on average only one to three metres above the water. That makes them the flattest country on earth and one of the best destinations for snorkelling and diving. Ashore, traditional fishing villages and resorts alternate.
Under sail, the two cruising areas differ over the course of the year. From June to October it is drier, and in the Seychelles the south-easterly blows at 15 to 25 knots; from November to April it stays more humid, with little wind and a calm sea. If you would like to charter in the Seychelles or the Maldives, you start from places such as Mahé or Malé, usually on a catamaran, which sits shallow in the water and reaches the sheltered waters.
Price range: from €55,000 per week, plus APA and local tax where applicable. The APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) covers fuel, harbour fees and provisions. It is paid in advance and settled at the end of the charter, and anything left over is refunded to you.

The Seychelles offer granite boulders, forest and short distances between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. The Maldives are flat atolls with long passages between the reefs, and the better diving.
Not really, but the monsoon shifts where the best spots are. Your crew plans the route around the monsoon phase so that you stay on the sheltered side.
Far fewer than in the Mediterranean, mostly catamarans and smaller motor yachts. An early enquiry matters more here than anywhere else.
Nancy Maier, founder of BlueSun Luxury Yachts, knows the harbours, the crews and the weeks that are still free. She replies within 24 hours, with a selection rather than a price list.
